LISTEN to the interview

Singer Jimmy O'Brien talks about his childhood in the Sliabh Luachra area of Co. Kerry. He recalls a vibrant social environment, with lots of music and dancing. Jimmy trained as a mechanic and, with his wife Mary, emigrated to New York in 1956, and he speaks fondly of the GAA matches and house parties there. He returned to Ireland in 1961, having bought a pub on Castle Street in Killarney (pictured).
